Boko Haram fighters stormed a vital military base in Borno, killing a colonel and at least thirty troops, as well as ambushing a large number of others.
According to reports, the insurgents pretended to be friendly troops in order to gain access to the reinforced headquarters of the strong 156 Task Force Battalion in Mainok.
The timing of the attack also raised concerns that internal military operations, especially communication signals, may have been leaked to the insurgents.
Terrorists have attacked and destroyed critical military equipment, in yet another devastating development for Nigerian troops, who have been fighting the dreaded sect on the frontlines since 2009.
At least 50 troops are said to have deserted the battalion and gone to a nearby military base, with more believed to be lost in the jungle.
Meanwhile, after terrorists from the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) ambushed a military convoy and attacked a military base in Mainok, Borno State, on Sunday, Nigerian military authorities have remained silent for several hours.
Many people are concerned about how insurgents could attack the town in broad daylight in multiple gun trucks and Mine- Resistant Ambush Protected vehicles (MRAPs).
The fact that they may have gotten away with some of the latest MRAPs being shipped just highlighted Nigeria' s military' s vulnerability in the theater of war.
Although it was reported that Nigeria suffered some casualties, some other sources were emphatic that thousands of Nigerian soldiers paid the ultimate price defending their position.
There was also the unfortunate aspect of Nigerian Air Force fighter jets accidentally bombing Nigerian troops, killing many of them and contributing to the ISWAP attack' s casualties.
There was no official narrative about what happened at Mainok
